Flat feet is a common complaint we see as Podiatrists. The flattening of the arch (known as Over-pronation) can sometimes cause a lot of excess stress and strain on the feet and lower legs. It can even be attributed to pain at the knees, hip and lower back. During the gait cycle, if you are excessively pronating, then your muscles and tendons within the foot and lower leg, work over-time to stabilise the foot to allow you to toe off. This can cause muscle fatigue and eventually lead to stress related injuries. Treatment usually involves footwear changes and implementation of specialised shoe inserts, known as Orthotics.
