Dry needling is the use of “acupuncture needles” for therapy of muscle pain, sometimes also known as intramuscular stimulation.
Dry needling works by directly inserting the fine needles into “trigger points” of the muscle. Trigger points consist of multiple contraction points or “knots” which cause muscle tightness and pain. By inserting a needle into a trigger point the tight knot releases, giving the muscle increased flexibility and decreased pain.
Conducted over a short course of frequent treatments, dry needling can be used to effectively treat a range of pathologies such as:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Calf pain
- Muscle tears and strains
- Achilles tendon injuries
- Forefoot pain
